AFTER months of protesting, it is nearly D-day for Horton Kirby fire station.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) members will decide whether or not to close the station at a meeting held at their headquarters, in Tovil, near Maidstone, on Wednesday morning. (February 15)

A petition containing more than 2,600 signatures was presented to KFRS opposing the closure and 200 campaigners attended a meeting to discuss the station’s future in December last year.

Campaigner Colin Willson said: “We’re hoping the decision comes our way but trying not to get our hopes up too high for fear of disappointment.

“We’ve done all we can and have put the case we see across to the fire authority and hope they have read all we sent to them.”

Eight Kent fire stations are set to close today as part of plans to improve the county’s fire service.

Check back on Wednesday to hear the outcome of the meeting.

Is this a "full time" fire station, or where the appliance is kept - then manned by retained firefighters when necessary?
