A DRIVER who led police on a 130mph zig-zag car chase in a 50mph zone has walked free from court after a judge said he was "a very silly boy".

Jordan Newington, of Rowan Road, Bexleyheath, raced off in his Vauxhall Corsa when officers caught him speeding on the A2 in Bexleyheath and signalled for him to pull over.

The aspiring soldier hit 130mph, weaving between all three lanes of the busy road and undertaking other drivers.

Woolwich Crown Court heard the chase only came to an end when the 21-year-old gave up and let officers arrest him.

Tests for drink and drugs proved negative and he admitted to dangerous driving and failing to stop when asked by police on October 15.

Newington was handed an 11-month jail term suspended for 24 months, banned from driving for three years, ordered to do 270 hours of unpaid work and told to pay £250 towards prosecution costs.

After hearing Newington is remorseful and wants to join the army, Judge Charles Byers, said: "Well, he's a very silly boy."

Passing sentence, he said: "As you careered across the road from lane one to lane three and lane three to lane one, undertaking others, you reached speeds of up to 130mph.

"It is fortunate that no-one was killed by your actions. You would have been looking at a sentence of four years in prison and you would have ruined your own life as well as your victim's.

"Young people such as yourself seem to think the A2 can be used as a racetrack, but it can't. They seem to think themselves and others are immortal, but they're not.

"And you seemed to think you could drive in that manner and outrun police, but you couldn't."
