IF you didn’t manage to get a ticket for the Olympics, Blackheath could be your ideal destination this summer.

A massive screen, drinking, fairground rides, sports and live entertainment could all come to the heath for the duration of the Games.

Continental Drifts, acting on behalf of Lewisham Council, have applied for a premises licence to run Blackheath Live from July 27 to August 12.

The area called Washerwoman’s Bottom will feature a screen 7.6m by 4.8m backing onto Royal Parade and is likely to show the BBC’s coverage until around 11pm.

Nearby will be a food and drink area with a capacity of around 5,000 people and there are also plans for community groups to be represented.

Fairground rides, including a big wheel are planned for the Circus Field area. There are also plans for a tent hosting tea dances, cinema showings, storytelling and live music.

Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock said: “'The London 2012 Games are a once-in-a-lifetime event and we want our residents to have a great place to meet and enjoy the spectacle.

“And lying within the last mile of the Games venue at Greenwich Park, we can welcome the world's visitors to stop, relax and join our celebrations in Blackheath.'

The Blackheath Society, which contested the recent planning approval for a pop festival on the heath, has cautiously backed the plans.

In a statement they said: “The Blackheath Society supports this event in principle and will play an active role in ensuring that there is a full and proper event management and acoustic plan in place.

“In addition the society will lobby for the full reinstatement of the heath and act to ensure that the heath is protected, as far as possible, from this intense period of usage.”
