A NEW tunnel beneath the Thames will be built at Greenwich within the next decade, Boris Johnson will announce tonight.
The tunnel will connect the peninsula with Silvertown and is estimated to have a capacity of 2,400 vehicles per hour in each direction.
Mr Johnson is also expected to tell London government chiefs that a new ferry crossing between Thamesmead and Beckton at Gallions Reach will be open by 2017.
Transport for London will begin consultation on the new tunnel next month.
Last year, Chancellor George Osborne announced he would explore the crossing proposals, though exactly how the new links will be funded remains unclear.
Campaigners in Greenwich have long requested an extra river crossing to relieve pressure on the Blackwall Tunnel.
