A SET of war memorial plaques to replace ones which were stolen for scrap earlier this year have been officially unveiled.

The Hither Green Cemetery plaques, in memory of the 342 air raid casualties of Lewisham who died during the Second World War, were swiped in January.

Now the new ones, made from material that has practically no scrap value, have been rededicated in a formal ceremony.

Lewisham Council cabinet member for customer services Councillor Susan Wise said: "It was despicable that someone should stoop so low as to steal the original war memorial plaques.

“It was lovely to see them finally replaced - they honour the people of Lewisham who died during the war and it is only fitting that they are remembered."
