A LOOTER who handed himself into police after spotting his picture in News Shopper following August's rioting has been jailed for 12 months.

Perry Dunnett, aged 24, broke into Richer Sounds in East Street, Bromley, after smashing the window of the store with a brick, during the disorder on August 8.

Dunnett, of Mosul Way, Bromley Common, turned himself in at Bromley police station nine days later and even brought the Freeview television box he had pinched with him.

He had seen CCTV images of himself in News Shopper's appeal to help police catch the rioters.

Dunnett pleaded guilty to burglary at Inner London Crown Court.

Bromley police's borough commander Chief Superintendent Charles Griggs said: "Convictions like these demonstrate the value of CCTV and our partnership with the council and our local papers.

"They have been instrumental in enabling us to identify and arrest suspects in respect of the disorder.

"We are determined to bring everyone who committed these mindless acts of criminality to justice, and I can promise you more arrests will follow over the coming months. The sentences imposed send a clear message that society will not tolerate this behaviour and they will not get away with it."

Nineteen people have so far been sentenced in connection with the riots with 17 more awaiting trial and additional suspects on bail while police investigations continue.
