A 22-YEAR-OLD man who threw bricks at police during the Woolwich riots has been jailed for more than five years.

Johanson Ago, of no fixed address, was arrested after he handed himself in at Plumstead police station.

The search for Ago started in August when police released CCTV images and footage of a man in Beresford Square wearing a distinctive Adidas top and throwing bricks at a police car with officers inside.

Detectives, who looked at hours of CCTV, were able to locate Ago from the moment he arrived in Woolwich just after 8pm on August 8, until he left at 12.20am.

Images collated from CCTV cameras across the area show Ago attacking a police vehicle in Woolwich New Road, near Beresford Square.

He can be seen smashing the rear view mirrors and the windscreen and then turning attack to an unmarked police vehicle about to leave the square with officers on board.

Ago can be seen throwing bricks at the windscreen whilst officers are trying to leave. He can also be seen smashing a window as the vehicle goes past him.

After this Ago spent the entire evening burgling six shops in Woolwich town centre.

On October 3 Ago was charged with six counts of burglary, one of attempted burglary and one of violent disorder.

He pleaded guilty to all counts at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on November 15 and was sentenced to five years and four months in prison at Inner London Crown Court on November 22.

Acting Detective Sergeant Mark Gilchrist said: "It was clear from the footage we viewed that Ago was an active participant in the disorder that engulfed Woolwich and saw the town centre ransacked.

“This is the longest sentence handed down so far in connection with the riots and we are pleased with the result."
