IT has taken six years and countless accidents but a campaign for safety improvements at a dangerous junction finally seems to have paid off.

Catford people and their councillors have long demanded better pedestrian crossing facilities at the junction of Bromley Road and Whitefoot Lane, the former site of the Tiger's Head.

There have been numerous car crashes at the junction, including two smashes within seven days last July.

Back in 2009, 22-year-old Simon Allinson was lucky not to lose a leg when his motor scooter collided with a Mercedes at the junction.

Former London mayor Ken Livingstone first promised improvements back in 2006 but in 2008 his successor Boris Johnson said the plans were still being reviewed.

Now Transport for London has finally announced planned improvements.

They include adding pedestrian phasings to the lights across Whitefoot Lane and the northern side of Bromley Road, with central refuges for safer crossing.

This will involve widening the road junction, removing guard rails and adding new cycle stop lanes.

Secretary of Catford Southend Residents' Association John Grosvenor said: “It’s really good news that TfL have finally produced a proposal that will make this junction safer for pedestrians, particularly as it is so near a school.

“Let's hope that the work will take place as soon as possible after the consultation period has ended.”

Chairman of the London Assembly Transport Committee Caroline Pidgeon has asked countless questions about the junction over the years.

She said: “After six years of false promises it is wonderful that much needed pedestrian improvements will finally be made to this dangerous junction.”

Ex-councillor John Russell, now standing for the London Assembly, said: “It is great news to know that all this hard work has finally got a great result.”

A consultation will run until November 8 on the plans. To have your say email STEngagement@tfl.gov.uk
