Here is nine-year-old Alex Moore's winning Young Author Competition entry

Whapper Flapper was a two-year-old penguin and he played with penguin friends called Little Dude and Flip Fisher. They lived in the coldest part of the whole wide world. Their favourite game was the foot and stone race; they placed a stone on their feet and saw who could waddle the fastest.

Whapper Flapper and his friends also liked to fish. One day they met a magic fish swimming in the sea - his name was Bob and he gave them a mysterious bottle which contained a magic potion. The message was a recipe for a flying potion.

FLYING POTION

150 EAGLES FEATHERS
BIG BANANA SHAPED BUBBLES OF AIR
FURRIOUSLY FLAPPING WINGS
STUCK TIGHTLY ON YOU
WITH LOTS OF RUNNY GLUE

Whapper Flapper took half of the potion, flew to England and landed in my garden. He was surprised how warm it was even though it was winter.

My mum and I spotted the penguin in our garden. We took him to the Glades in our car, and he helped Father Christmas to give presents to the children.

After Christmas Whapper Flapper waved goodbye to his new friends, took the other half of the flying potion and flew back to the South Pole.
