All schoolchildren should be taught basic first aid as a compulsory part of their education, according to the British Red Cross.
The organisation has published a report naming eight medical essentials which every child should know, including how to deal with resuscitation.
A new poll found more than 90 per cent of the public believe first aid should be taught to every child.
The Red Cross report says about three million people a year have injuries which could be helped by first aid.
