Future of Orpington Hospital is up for discussion

ORPINGTON Hospital is being put under the microscope as part of a project looking at the future of health care in the town.

South London Healthcare NHS Trust (SLHT) says from next April it will not be able to run services at the hospital in the same way as it does at the moment.

Because of this the trust is working with NHS South East London (SEL) and Bromley PCT and GP commissioners to come up with a plan for Orpington’s future.

This includes talking to representatives of patient groups, staff and clinicians to make recommendations.

And a series of public meetings could be held from November to January to get residents views.

A statement issued on behalf of SLHT, Bromley Council and Bromley GP commissioners said: "We want to revitalise health services for Orpington patients and end the uncertainty about the future of Orpington Hospital.

“It is clear from the A Picture of Health consultation and subsequent review, that hospital and community services should be integrated to more effectively meet the needs of local residents.

“It is important that any recommendations ensure the services provided now at Orpington Hospital are still available for local people in a way that benefits the whole town.”

And Orpington MP Jo Johnson welcomed the engagement process on the future of the hospital.

He said: “The uncertainty over the future of the Orpington Hospital site has been hanging over patients and NHS staff for too long.

“My bottom line is that I’m committed to high quality health services delivered locally in Orpington and I look forward to seeing the recommendations for the future of Orpington Hospital from patient groups, NHS staff and clinicians.”

And what is the betting that at the end of the consultation period the hospital will be closed down & the site sold?

I want so much to be proved wrong.

considering orpington hospital was opened in ww2 for injured canadian forces, its done well to last this long. over the years most of the services have been moved to pru and houses have been built so can't see what the problem is with the rest of it closing down and moving to the pru site, surely this would save the nhs some money to invest in treatment/research?

I would put money on it being closed and everyone having to go to farnbrough. Orpington is a joke now, no police station, no job centre, and now soon to be no hospital. Everything goes to bloody Bromley. It makes me angry that crime here has gone up since the police station closed down, and the job centre being moved means people dont even bother going and instead start acting like idiots and stealing. All so easily avoidable, give orpington the means to support itself and stop giving everything to Bromley, even our students get told to go to Bromley college while people from lewisham, brixton and croydon come to our college. It makes no sense

Orpington has had a hospital since World War 1, not World War 2, and the services provided by the hospital have been deliberately run down over the past few years so as to give an excuse to close the place down. If you think that closing the hospital is an attempt to save money for NHS treatment and or research then you are not as cyncial as your moniker implies. A cynic would think that closing Orpington was simply an attempt to sell the land for profit and boost the pay of executives who will have a bigger remit in one huge hospital, rather than worry about providing local services.

(The above post was a reply to cynical-mum, for some reason her quote was not included).

Absolutely. Orpington has been neglected ever since Orpington Council was subsumed into Bromley Borough in the sixties, the neglect has just accelerated over the past few years.

I was told many years ago that part of Orpington Hospital is still owned by the Canadian government who originally had the hospital built to hold Canadian soldiers injured in WW1. I was also told that IF this part of the hospital is sold that the money has to go back to the Canadian government. Perhaps this is just an old wives tale but it would explain why they've sold off all but a small portion to housing

It was actually opened World War 1, but I think people are upset because it was redeveloped and a lot of the land (where there were old huts) sold for housing - so what has the HA done with the cash?
Later the car park at the rear was sold for yet more housing (again, where did the money go?).
Over the years there have been promises galore that the hospital would remain (clinics, surgical wards etc)

Apart from the huge investment in the High Street and College, yes?

My sentiments exactly. It's criminial that we here in Orpington has to go all the way to Bromley. I've only been back living in Orpington 3 years and already the social services office has gone.

NO !
The funding to wreck the High Street was mainly funded by The Mayor of London not Bromley Council.

The College was mainly funded by a Central Goverment grant and the rest borrowed, again not Bromley Council.

So including the High Street and the College, the answer remains Bromley Council does very little for Orpington.
