“SOMEBODY will be killed” - the words of a woman who fears a fatal accident will happen at a “dangerous” roundabout unless safety is improved.

Katrina Cummins wants the mini-roundabout at the junction of Beckenham’s Pelham Road and Birkbeck Road, where she lives, replaced by large speed humps.

This follows a Ford Transit van and Toyota Land Cruiser crashing at the roundabout at around 5.15pm on Wednesday (Aug 10), causing minor injuries to a 54-year-old man.

Student nurse Miss Cummins, 35, said: “I’m worried there will be a more serious accident and somebody will be killed.

“It is a very dangerous roundabout. I have nearly had accidents there lots of times in the past because people go too fast and don’t give way.”

Miss Cummins and others who live on Birkbeck Road are urging Bromley Council to make the junction safer.

She said: “I think they need to get rid of the roundabout and put in big humps to really slow things down.”

Margaret Keen, who also lives on Birkbeck Road, says the problems are caused by the “ridiculous” traffic flow system in the street.

At both ends of Birkbeck Road, there is a one-way system where traffic can only enter the road, but it is then two-way on the stretch between the Pelham Road and Avenue Road junctions.

Mrs Keen, 68, said: “The one way system is the whole cause of the problems. If they made it two-way, there would not be so many people turning off at the roundabout.”

A Bromley Council spokesman said there had been “no reported injury accidents at this location” in the three years prior to the crash on August 10.

He added: “Although accident numbers are at historic lows now, we do look at patterns to see if they can be reduced further.

“When we receive details about this accident from the police, we will be able to understand precisely why it happened and whether anything more could be done.”
