A BOGUS builder who conned an elderly man out of his life savings and then went on the run is finally behind bars.

Henry Charles Vincent, of Wagtail Way, Orpington, has been jailed for six years after being found guilty of fraud.

Maidstone Crown Court heard the 52-year-old, along with his son, carried out roof repairs at an address in Orpington and took more than £72,000 from the 81-year-old homeowner.

The conmen demanded large sums of money claiming it was for materials and that the roof joists were rotten.

They even went to the length of showing the homeowner maggots as proof.

After it was reported to police, an independent surveyor found very little work had been completed and any repairs needed would only cost £50.

Henry Charles Vincent’s son received a six year sentence two years ago.

Vincent Snr went on the run but was caught in September last year.

Detective Sergeant Benjamin Turner, from Kent Police, said: “These rogue builders give a bad name to tradesmen who just want to do an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay.

“This was a cowardly crime in stealing from this elderly and vulnerable man and I am pleased that the pair have both finally been brought to justice.

“I would urge people looking to appoint a builder to ensure that they are reputable, or choose one who is approved by the TrustMark scheme.”
