A WOMAN escaped a fire in her house yesterday evening after being alerted by her neighbour.

The woman was watching TV in the living room of her home in Allington Road, Orpington, unaware of the blaze in the front bedroom upstairs.

Firefighters from Orpington station were called to the blaze at around 7.20pm.

A firefighter who was on the scene said: “The lady of the house was downstairs watching the TV and the man was out at the time.

“She was told by one of her neighbours that the fire had started. The smoke alarm had gone off too.”

The woman escaped the house as the flames ravaged the front bedroom, causing severe damage to the roof.

Firefighters from Orpington station spent around five hours dealing with the blaze, which is believed to have been started by an electrical fault.
