THOUSANDS of people have signed a petition calling for safety improvements on the stretch of road where schoolboy Kaine May was killed.

Friends of 14-year-old Kaine are urging Transport for London (TfL) to build a footbridge over the A20 outside Flamingo Park on the border of Chislehurst and Sidcup.

Almost 3,000 people have signed the petition since it was created by Kaine’s friend Karl Newnham on Wednesday (July 20).

Kemnal Technology College pupil Kaine, from Bexley, died after being hit by a Honda Accord while trying to cross the dual carriageway at around 3.45pm on July 17.

In his message urging others to sign the petition, Karl says: “Many people run across that road everyday, so this is why there needs to be a footbridge there to stop any more tragedies from happening.”

Kaine’s mum Michelle Stevenson is backing the petition, and has paid tribute to her “beautiful” son, saying his loss has left the “biggest hole” in her heart.

She said: “I am so very proud to be your mum and so wish I could have seen you grow and have a family of your own.

"I will miss you so so much – you have left the biggest hole in my heart that no one could ever repair.”

Kemnal Technology College headteacher Christian Markham is also supporting the petition.

He said: “On a personal level, we are supporting the petition. We have not spoken to the governors yet, but I suspect they would be very supportive and we will follow this up in the new year in September.”

A TfL spokesman said it is focusing on assisting the police investigation into Kaine’s death, and will consider improving safety on the road after the investigation concludes.

- The driver of the Accord, a 34-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, and bailed to return to a south London police station in October.
