GREENWICH and Lewisham are to receive over £1.4 million to boost sports clubs.

The Sports Legacy Fund will mean grassroots sports in Greenwich will receive a £269,000 boost, while Lewisham will get £169,000.

Some of the money will be used for grants to allow sports clubs and community groups to provide free coaching for sports including swimming, football and cycling.

In addition, schemes such as wheelchair basketball, touch rugby and a programme for teenagers combining football, volunteering and employment skills will receive financial support.

Greenwich will be given £480,000 for these schemes, while Lewisham will receive £562,000.

The funding has been announced by the mayor of London, Boris Johnson, as part of a drive to get thousands more people fit and active.

Mr Johnson said: “We are storming ahead to revamp facilities and increase sports participation.”

Londoners wanting to become a sports coach, official or volunteer are being provided with heavily subsidised places in a bid to encourage more people into sport.
