A SHOPLIFTER who drove a car at a police officer while fleeing from a supermarket after stealing bottles of whisky has been jailed for 20 months.

Terry Roberts had just stolen the alcohol from the Sainsbury’s in Chislehurst when he was clocked driving at 48mph in Sundridge Avenue, Bickley.

Instead of stopping he drove at a police officer who had to dive out of the way.

A short while later the same officer saw the vehicle parked in nearby Lewes Road and the whisky bottles were inside in a shopping basket.

Roberts, of Giggs Hill, St Paul’s Cray, was arrested nearby.

He pleaded guilty at Croydon Crown Court on July 13 to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and theft.

The 43-year-old was jailed for 17-months for the driving offences as well as being disqualified from driving for two years and must pay a £750 fine.

He was also sentenced to three months for the theft.
