A COMMUNITY has rallied round the “first ever” homeless man in their village to provide him and his dog with food.

Residents and workers in Locksbottom have been bringing supplies to Anthony Yates since he set up camp outside the derelict Easy Living furniture shop on Crofton Road three weeks ago.

Mr Yates, 42, and his 18-month-old Staffordshire bull terrier have been inundated with hot and cold food and drinks as well as books and newspapers to read.

Mr Yates says he became homeless around six months ago after losing his job as a tree surgeon.

He said: “I am so grateful to the people of Locksbottom for how they have treated me. They have been amazing. I didn’t expect to be given so much help.”

Mr Yates says he lost his accommodation, which was provided by his employer, because he could no longer work after breaking his heel and ankle.

He says his injuries have prevented him from finding another job, and claims Bromley Council has so far not offered him accommodation despite his pleas for help.

Laura Kenward, 27, who works at a security company in Locksbottom, has been taking food and blankets to Mr Yates.

She said: “He is the first ever homeless person I have seen in Locksbottom, and it just makes you so sad to see someone in such an awful situation.

“I’m proud that people here have rallied round to help him. Everyone deserves a chance.”

A council spokeswoman said: “The council gives advice aimed at helping to prevent someone being made homeless and may be able to offer temporary accommodation.

“We also work with ThamesReach. They are experts in working with homeless rough sleepers who are often reluctant to engage with services.”
