THOUSANDS of people flocked to the annual donkey derby and summer fair hosted by Welling Round Table.

The event, held in St Mary's recreation ground in Bourne Road, Bexley Village, were opened by Bexley's deputy mayor and mayoress Councillor Colin Tandy and his wife, Valerie.

Around 4,000 people enjoyed the hilarity of the donkey race and the chance of a small flutter on the outcome, as well as a funfair and miniature train rides, a chance to handle owls and lots of stalls and sideshows.

The event began in typical Round Table style, with a donation, and money raised on the day will go towards helping the area's charities and good causes.

Alfred Hake, commanding officer of 359 Bexleyheath Squadron of the Air Training Corps, was there to accept a new minibus given to the squadron by Welling Round Table and presented by its chairman John Mullender.
