A FOUNDATION which includes a former candidate for London mayor will oversee a development near Millwall’s football ground.

The Surrey Canal Sports Foundation will steer the creation of an indoor centre for sporting excellence in New Cross, featuring boxing, cricket, table tennis, gymnastics, football, basketball, netball, hockey and a new leisure centre with swimming pool.

It will form part of the Renewal developer’s Surrey Canal Sporting Village - an £850m project set to include 2,700 new homes Former transport minister Steve Norris will chair the foundation, a charity which will secure funding and appoint a management company to run the sporting village.

A planning application for the project was submitted to Lewisham Council in February and will be considered later this year.
