WINE drinkers are being urged to watch out for counterfeit bottles of strange tasting Jacobs Creek from “Austrlia”.

The warning comes from Bromley’s trading standards after several bottles were seized from an off-licence in Beckenham.

This followed a complaint from a customer who said the wine tasted strange.

While the bottles look genuine, the give away comes in the form of a misspelling on the label, where Australia is spelt Austrlia.

The shop owner provided paperwork which showed the drink was bought from a “trusted” wholesaler in East London.

Officers say their enquiries are ongoing but the trader is unlikely to be charged.

Head of trading standards Rob Vale said: “In this case it looks like the seller was completely unaware there was a problem with the wine as he had assumed, with reason, the warehouse from which he purchased the wine was a trusted supplier.

“It looks like the counterfeit wine may have been mixed with genuine bottles and we have alerted the authorities in the East London area. We are now looking at other shops in the area and would ask anyone who has doubts to call us.

“The bottles appear identical to the real thing, apart from a tell-tale misspelling on the label on the back, where Australia is spelt Austrlia.”
