THIRTEEN disabled youngsters will get the chance to go on holiday after a charity ball raised £6,500 for the trip.

Sam Goncalves, whose 13-year-old son Shane has cerebral palsy, organised the black tie event at Metrogas Sports Ground, in Avery Hill Road, New Eltham.

Around 170 people attended the event, which included a raffle and an auction.

Cash raised will go to Charlton School, in Charlton Park Road, Charlton, which is taking pupils aged 12 and 13 to Woodlarks camp in Surrey.

The teens will get to swim in an outdoor heated pool, trampoline, visit a bird park and sit around a camp fire.

Mrs Goncalves, of Southwood Road, New Eltham, also ran the Paris marathon to help raise funds for the five day holiday.

The 41-year-old said: “Due to current cuts from local authorities trips like these must be funded through fundraising.

“Opportunities for children with complex needs like my son are few and far between.”

She added: “Whilst running the Paris marathon on an extremely hot day I glanced at my son’s picture which I had sown onto my running top for strength.

“I recalled the numerous surgical procedures he had at Great Ormond Street Hospital which were necessary to help him walk.

“His courage and determination are what drives me – he is my inspiration.”
