THIS was the scene when a pit fire spread to a vehicle workshop in Swanscombe on Saturday (May 7).

Ten fire engines from Dartford and Gravesend battled the fire at Swanscombe Business Centre, London Road from 5.30pm.

Firefighters spent hours battling the fire, thought to have started in a pit filled with tyres and rubbish.

The crews continued to fight the blaze until the early hours of Sunday morning, before finally ensuring the site was safe at around 7am that day.

The blaze was thought to have spread from the pit onto surrounding buildings including a vehicle workshop which contained gas cylinders.

Thick black smoke could be seen pouring out from the site, while Swanscombe residents complained of a strong smell of burning tyres.

No casualties have been reported and the fire is not being treated as suspicious.
