BOY George has officially opened a music workshop in Greenwich for visually impaired people.

The Karma Chameleon singer was guest of honour at the opening of the guitar workshop which runs daily at the Abbey Arms Pub on Wilton Road, Abbey Wood.

The workshop is run by Danny Pickett who three years ago suffered from Greaves disease which left him visually impaired.

Mr Pickett became involved with the workshop through Blind Independence Greenwich (BIG) a charity that works with visually impaired people in the area.

The 44-year-old from Shooters Hill, Greenwich said: “I didn't even know that BIG existed until four months ago.

"After my operation to restore my sight I wanted to do something to give back and this has just been great."

Mr Pickett offers free 45-minute tuition to four students, five days a week and the number is growing.

Speaking at the opening, Boy George said: "It’s fantastic that something like this is available in the area. I didn't hesitate when I was asked to do the opening.

"Jose Feliciano is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard playing, and he's blind but has amazing feel.

He added: "Maybe it's because the other senses get heightened, but it's so encouraging to see visually impaired people giving something like this a go."

Also present at the opening was Boy George's mum, Dinah. She said: "I am extremely proud of George, he is finally back to his real self.

"I go along to as many of these things as possible - especially if it is local."
