THERE will be new trees galore to be planted in London as more grant money becomes available for volunteer tree planting projects.

London Mayor Boris Johnson already has his own project to plant 10,000 new street trees in priority areas across London, including Erith.

People are now being invited to bid for grants to plant the last 500.

Now the Forestry Commission has put up £200,000 to provide awards of between £500 and £5,000 for community tree planting projects.

And there is another £250,000 available from the Mayor’s Team London volunteering scheme, also for community tree planting.

They all form part of the Mayor’s RE:LEAF campaign, to increase tree cover in London from 20 to 25 per cent by 2025.

Bids for the street tree and Forestry Commission grants opened last week.
