BROMLEY is the place to be to celebrate the royal wedding, according to a survey of towns across the country.

Figures from campaign group Republic show the borough has had the fifth highest number of applications to host street parties on Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding day on April 29.

Bromley Council says it has received 40 requests from households to host events and is set to get even more ahead of Friday’s deadline (APRIL 8).

Neighbours in Blakeney Avenue and Monivea Road, Beckenham, are planning a day of bunting and children’s games to mark the occasion.

One of the organisers, mum-of-three Fiona Murphy, said: “I think the fact Bromley has a high number of street parties planned shows what great community spirit we have in our borough.

“In terms of the wedding I remember how exciting it was as a child to watch Charles and Diana get married and I want my children to enjoy and remember Kate and William's wedding in the same way.”

News Shopper: Party in Glenview Road celebrating Charles and Diana's wedding day Paul Cruickshank remembers his street hosting a party on Charles and Diana’s wedding day in 1981.

The 63-year-old, of Glenview Road, Bromley, took a photo of the celebration and is keen to find out if anybody in the picture still lives in his road.

He said: “I wonder how many people recognise either their own or other members of their family, or neighbours, bearing in mind that everyone must be 30 years older.

“Since the picture was taken, people have come and gone, but we’re still there.”

Rob Cundy, chairman of business forum Love Bromley, said: "We're a traditional community, tradition is an important part of both businesses and the people. It doesn't surprise me that everyone wants a party.”
