MORE royal wedding street parties are being planned in Kent than anywhere else in the country, figures show.

Kent County Council (KCC) has received more than 60 applications from residents, which, according to national researcher Republic, ranks it top in the country.

So far, four street parties are planned in Gravesend and four in Dartford, including one in Vanessa Way.

KCC’s cabinet member for Highways, Councillor Bryan Sweetland has attributed the popularity of parties to a much simplified application process.

All charges have been waived and residents need only fill out a simple form on the council’s website.

Cllr Sweetland said: “We set out to make sure this process was as simple as possible.

“Our approach to applications had fuelled residents’ enthusiasm for community events to mark the big day.”

But vicar of Northfleet’s All Saints Church, Dr John Perumbalath hopes the big day will spark residents to think about more than stringing up the bunting.

The Rev, who is holding a tea dance to celebrate the wedding at his church in Perry Street, said: “We celebrate true love.

“It’s a national celebration and I hope people get encouraged to the concept of marriage.”

Gravesham Council is marking the day with a parade through the town centre and entertainment from a Queen tribute band.

Meanwhile, Dartford Council will be holding a concert in the bandstand in Central Park on April 24.
