A DANGEROUS junction could finally get a pedestrian crossing after years of deadlock over the issue.

People living nearby and ward councillors have started a long-running campaign to get green man crossings at Catford’s junction with Bromley Road, Whitefoot Lane and Southend Lane.

Former mayor Ken Livingstone first promised improvements back in 2006 but in 2008 his successor Boris Johnson said the plans were still being reviewed.

Now the mayor has announced Transport for London aims to consult with the council in 2011 before a wider public consultation.

Responding to a question from Lib Dem London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon, he said improvements could be in place by next Autumn.

Ms Pidgeon, vice chairwoman of the London Assembly Transport Committee, said: "There have been far too many false promises about improvements to this junction made by the present and previous Mayors of London.

"It is vital that promises are now met and that this junction is finally made safe for pedestrians."
