BREATHING in smoke from a kitchen fire left a man needing hospital treatment last night (March 22).

Ambulance staff checked the man over outside his flat in Linden Grove, Penge, before taking him to hospital at around 7.20pm.

The smoke inhalation is not believed to be life threatening.

But a London Fire Brigade spokesman, from Beckenham fire station, says the man would have been alerted to the fire and got out of the flat sooner if he had a smoke alarm.

Crews from Beckenham, Woodside and Forest Hill were called at around 7.10pm and were at the scene for around two hours.

There was substantial fire damage to the kitchen and smoke damage to the rest of the home.
