STUDENTS have occupied Deptford Town Hall in a show of solidarity with striking lecturers.

More than 60 Goldsmiths University students started the occupation at about 8.10pm yesterday (March 21) and barricaded the entrance to the Town Hall allowing only cleaners, porters and security into the building.

Although no official time has been set for the end of the occupation, it is expected to continue until Saturday (March 26) to coincide with the national ‘March Against the Cuts’ through London.

A group of students from Goldsmiths Fight back are on constant watch at the barricade which they have put up at the entrance to the town hall.

Laura Hartley of the group said: “We had a meeting last night in which we decided to do something in solidarity with the UCU strike.

“Our occupation is in support of the lecturers who are standing at the picket line as the cuts effect us all.”

University College Union (UCU) members of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) are striking against proposals to reduce pension benefits and increase costs.

Striking lecturers set up a picket line in front of the university’s main building from 8am to 12 noon and then rallied to New Cross Library on New Cross Road.

The lecturers have another similar day of action planned for Thursday (March 24).

News Shopper: UCU’s Secretary Des Freedman at the picket line

UCU’s Secretary Des Freedman said: “There has been amazing support from students and they are really backing us which is great.”

“More than 60 members of staff have signed up to be on the picket line and many are staying for much longer than their two hour shift.”

He added: “We have had a lot support from everyone, with people honking as they drive past, and some even refusing to cross the picket line to make deliveries.”

“It is bad enough the government is stealing pensions and charging students exorbitant money, but to try and change the whole atmosphere is just criminal.”

A spokesperson for Goldsmiths said: "Goldsmiths can confirm a group of people are currently in occupation of the Deptford Town Hall Building. This is all the information we will be releasing at this time."
