SQUATTERS have occupied a disused jobcentre in Deptford and turned it into a social centre.
The Jobcentre Plus building, in Deptford High Street, was closed down in November last year. Around 50 people took over the centre on Saturday (March 12) ad have since turned it into a Social Centre.
On the occupier’s website called, Social Centre Plus, they wrote: “We have occupied the disused Deptford Job Centre as a response to the brutal cuts to public services being carried out at both a local and national level.
“We aim to clean the place up and convert it into Social Centre Plus: a new public space for members of the local community here in Deptford and the surrounding area, that we can share, contribute to, and create a truly social building and a hub of local opposition to the cuts programme.”
The group has invited people to visit the building for film nights, workshops and cups of tea.
On Wednesday (March 16) the doors will be open from noon to 2pm for a lunchtime cafe. The website says “bring your own food or share some of ours.”
From 6pm to 7pm people are invited to have “a cuppa and a chat” before a selection of short films are shown from 7pm.
Meetings will be held by the squatters today (March 14), tomorrow and Thursday from 7pm.
