MORE THAN 50 firefighters were called to a barn fire yesterday after two industrial units were found alight.

Kent fire and rescue arrived at Lombard Street at 4.15pm yesterday (March 7) and used four jets and a hydrant to tackle the fire in the units and to cool surrounding properties.

The fire was contained to the original units.

There were some road closures as a result of the fire, including Horton Road at the junction with Mussenden Lane and also Rays Hill.

Fire fighting operations were scaled down just after 7pm and four fire appliances and around 20 firefighters remained at the scene damping down the fire.

Deputy divisional commander Graham Day said: “Crews worked extremely hard to contain what was a well established fire to the building of origin and prevent it from spreading to other units nearby.”

No one is believed to have been injured in the fire and the cause is not yet known.
