Lewisham Council is urging people to make sure they can vote in the UK referendum on the voting system.

People need to be on the electoral register and either a British or qualifying Commonwealth citizen, or a citizen of the Irish Republic.

Lewisham Council chief executive and regional counting officer, Barry Quirk, is warning residents they need to act now if they are to have their say in the referendum on May 5.

He said: “If residents have not yet registered, or have moved home recently, they need to register their new address by April 14 or they will miss out on being able to vote.”

London spokesman from the Electoral Commission, Adrian Green, added: “Residents may also be planning to be away on May 5, given the extra Bank Holiday for the Royal Wedding.

“So it’s worth applying now to vote by post or proxy if that will suit your plans.”
