VOLUNTEERS working in one of Bexley’s premier open spaces managed to plant more than 600 new trees in just two hours.
Working with the Friends of Foots Cray Meadows and Bexley Council staff, they were taking part in one of the Friends’ tree planting days.
Whips (small saplings) of native species are being planted across the meadows in North Cray, to enhance the woodland areas.
The Friends’ events, which include seed gathering, bird and bat walks and helping in the creation of new ponds, are attracting increasing numbers of volunteers, including children and young people.
The next event will be another tree planting on March 26.
Springtime will also see the regular opening of the Friends’ information centre at the meadows, where people can find information about the meadows’ wildlife, on-going ecological projects and community events.
