A MAN shot dead by police in Brighton had a previous conviction for conspiracy to murder a woman whose body was found buried in a garden in Bromley.

Michael Fitzpatrick, known by the nickname Killer Mick, was wanted by Sussex Police for a string of post office armed robberies.

He was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 1999 after admitting conspiracy to murder Diana Goldsmith, the wife of millionaire Derek Goldsmith.

Her decomposed body was found in a garden in Turpington Lane in March 1997 more than two years after she had disappeared from her home in Sevenoaks.

Fitzpatrick, 49, is believed to have pulled out a handgun before armed plain clothed officers fired twice on Thursday in Brighton town centre.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is carrying out an investigation into the police shooting.
