Last weekend Big Garden Birdwatch looks set to be the biggest survey of UK garden birds ever, with more than 100,000 people registering their sightings, a 20 per cent increase on last year. Now the RSPB is urging those who have not yet sent in their results, to do so before February 18. Unusual sightings have included snipe, goosanders, little egrets and even a white tailed eagle.

The Wildlife Trust has published a new series of illustrated mini field guides to help people easily and quickly identify garden wildlife, insects and trees. The guides, which cost £4.99 each, have been illustrated by natural history artists and provide detailed descriptions, and other information together with illustrated comparisons with similar species.
