A MOTORIST called 999 after his Mercedes caught fire as he was driving in Thamesmead last night (January 19).
The man was travelling along Bentham Road at around 10.10pm when flames starting coming from under the bonnet.
Firefighters spent around 40 minutes dealing with the blaze which destroyed most of the A-Class vehicle.
It is believed to have been caused by an electrical or mechanical fault.
Buses were diverted while the emergency services were at the scene dealing with the incident and it caused traffic problems for other vehicles.
