A FALLING tree was like a ‘two second hurricane’ as it crashed down on to cars parked at Ravensbourne station this afternoon.

The 35ft tall tree caused untold damage to a white BMW 316 and a black Jaguar as it toppled over from Beckenham Place Park into Crab Hill, Beckenham.

It also damaged a parked red Citroen Picasso.

And a woman who was driving along the road in a blue BMW 318 narrowly avoided being hit although it is believed her car was slightly damaged.

The area has been cordoned off while emergency services deal with the incident although train services are still running as normal.

Cathy Davies, of Crab Hill, heard the tree fall and was initially puzzled as to what the sound was.

She said: “It reminded me of a tremendous gust of wind and it was like a two second hurricane.

“I heard it fall but could not place what it was until I heard the fire engine and knew something must have happened.”

John Nicholson,33, heard the sound of smashing glass from his house in River Park Gardens, Beckenham, and rushed to the station to see what had happened.

Mr Nicholson said: “I thought something had come down and I could hear the smashing of glass so did not think it was a tree.

“The tree is resting on a couple of parked cars and it has blocked the road.”

Emergency services are at the scene and workmen are reportedly beginning to chop up the tree.

Ms Davies, 56, says she believes the tree was dead and did not seem to have much of a root system to keep it in the ground.
