POLICE have been clamping down on drivers who pretend they are disabled to get a parking space.
Officers and Greenwich Council parking attendants swooped on cars in Woolwich Town Centre which were displaying blue badges for disabled people.
The badges were then checked against the scheme’s London-wide database.
Of 64 badges logged, 10 were being misused - including one that belonged to a dead person.
Five drivers were given parking fines, and four of the badges were seized.
Greenwich Council’s Cabinet Member for environment and community safety Councillor Maureen O’Mara said: “People borrow them from a badgeholder and use them. Some are even photocopied or stolen.
“There is a wholesale perception that there’s widescale abuse of the scheme.”
