A WITNESS appeal has been launched after a woman was assaulted in an unprovoked attack in Bexley while on her way home.

The 28-year-old victim was walking along Crayford Way, Bexley, at around 12.30am on Sunday (January 16) when a man approached her.

After trying to start a conversation with her he repeatedly hit her around the head before running off along Crayford Way towards The Rise or Thames Road.

The woman was taken to Darent Valley Hospital, Darenth, for treatment for facial bruising and swelling to her head and neck.

She has now been discharged from hospital and is recovering.

The suspect is described as being between 30 and 35 years of age, with short light blond hair.

He is around 6ft tall and of medium build.

At the time of the incident he was wearing a white top, grey jogging bottoms and white trainers.

Detective Inspector Keith Marshall from Bexley CID said: "This type of incident is exceptionally rare in our borough and we have no reason to believe at this stage that the assault is linked to any other current investigation.

"Anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious or has any knowledge of what happened is urged to call Bexley CID on 020 8284 9131 or to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, just tell them what you know, not who you are."
