AN ANTI-WAR campaign group has held a demonstration calling for peace in the Middle East.

Despite the United Nations organising a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel this week, protestors say they will continue to campaign for peace as trouble rumbles on.

More than 13 protestors from the Lewisham-based South East London Solidarity Group occupied the front of Lewisham Town Hall in Catford Road.

Group co-ordinator Norma Rana says one of the aims of the demonstration was to raise awareness about the plight of 9,000 Palestinians being held in Israeli jails, often without charge.

She said: "We have managed to gather 43 signatures for a petition calling for the Israeli government to unblock funding it owes to Palestinian public sector workers."

The group says it will now hold weekly pickets in Lewisham town centre in a bid to gather more support for the petition titled Stop Starving the Palestinians following the protest on August 10.
