TWO cannons which date back to the 1800s have been defaced by vandals twice in the space of three weeks.
The cannons are now sited in Birchmere Park, Thamesmead, and were discovered during the construction of the town in the 1960s.
They orginally came from Woolwich Arsenal.
Tom Broad, Gallions Housing Association’s head of environmental services said: “It is really disappointing some individuals chose to deface these historic items.
“The two cannons were at our Thamesmead office for a number of years.
“We really wanted the local community to enjoy this piece of Thamesmead history and so placed them in Birchmere Park.”
There are six more cannons and two anchors still being housed at Gallions’ offices and it is planned to also place them as landscape features around the town.
The two defaced cannons have now been cleaned and restored to their previous condition.
