Weather permitting, the Friends of Foots Cray Meadows will be holding a volunteer tree planting session in the meadows on January 15. Volunteers should meet at the Wildlife Information Centre off the meadows car park in Rectory Lane, Foots Cray, at 10am. Call the events manager on 07874 217186.

Embrace Social enterprises is hosting two digital photography workshops in London on January 22 and February 6. The January course costs £45 and is aimed at beginners, while the one in February costs £30 and will look at close-up photography. Lesnes Abbey Conservation Volunteers is looking for help on January 9 with clearing ivy and other invasive species, from Birch Hill in Lesnes Abbey Wood. Meet at the information centre next to the abbey ruins off Abbey Road, Belvedere at noon. Wear suitable clothes and all equipment will be provided.

The RSPB is warning people not to mix cooked meat fat with seeds and nuts to leave out for the birds during the cold weather. The fat, especially turkey fat, can reduce the waterproofing on birds’ feathers and can be toxic because of the amount of salt and other ingredients mixed into it during cooking. Only uncooked fats such as lard and suet should be used for bird cakes.

In its third annual Travel in London report, Transport for London (TfL) says there has been an increase of seven per cent in the number of people abandoning their cars in favour of public transport, cycling and walking and reducing car trips by around a million. Londoners now use public transport for 41 per cent of their journeys.
