DETECTIVES are appealing for information after a man’s body was discovered near train tracks close to Penge West railway station.

Investigators have also arrested five people, including four for conspiracy to steal and one on suspicion of murder, following the incident.

The dead man has been identified as 28-year-old James Smith, from Catford.

His injuries were consistent with electrocution and his family has been informed about his death.

British Transport Police officers are keeping an open mind about whether Mr Smith went into the nearby substation shortly before he was killed early on Saturday morning (December 4).

Investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Alison Palmer said: “We are currently keeping an open mind as to why James was in the area at the time of the incident and are keen to hear from anyone that can help us piece together the events leading up to and after his death.

DCI Palmer added: “Our enquiries in the local area are continuing and an investigation to establish the exact circumstances is ongoing.

”If you think you have any information about the incident, no matter how insignificant it may seem, we want to hear from you.

“This was a tragic incident that has seen a man lose his life and which sadly highlights the dangers of going trackside.

”Our thoughts remain with James’ family at this very difficult time for them.”
