THE big freeze is entering its third day with major disruptions to public transport, roads and schools.

Weather

GREENWICH, LEWISHAM AND BEXLEY: light snow showers and low temperatures of -1C to -4C this evening are set for all three areas.

But good news could be on its way. No snow is forecast for tomorrow, though it will be cold, and there could even be a spot of sunshine at the weekend.

BROMLEY: The snow will be heavy in Bromley today, with bitter temperatures of between -3C and -5C this evening.

Tomorrow will be just as cold, although no snow is forecast, with some sun on Saturday and rain on Sunday.

DARTFORD AND GRAVESEND: More heavy snow will fall in both areas today, with chilly temperatures of between -1C and -4C.

But no snow is forecast for Friday, and Saturday could see temperatures of 2C, reaching a rainy and humid 4C on Sunday.

Travel

Drivers are warned to take extreme care on the roads today and only drive if it is absolutely necessary.

The snow and ice is causing delays of around 30 minutes on the anti-clockwise carriageway of the M25, the Highways Agency says.

Traffic is moving freely along the A20 through Lewisham town centre, and gritters are treating the roads around Hither Green station.

Emergency breakdown service the AA has been dealing with double the normal amount of call outs at peak times in south-east London and north Kent due to the bad weather.

An AA spokesman said it was called out more than 18,000 times in the UK yesterday. The average number of call outs for a December day is around 10,000.

He said he expects fewer call outs today, with around 15,000, because many people have chosen not to risk taking to the roads.

There are still 30 minute delays on the anti-clockwise route of the M25 due to the weather.

Snow and ice are causing problems on Watling Street (A2) in Gravesend, with traffic slow in both directions between the Wrotham Road and Park Corner Road junctions.
