Bird charity the RSPB has published advice for Londoners on how to deal with the increasing numbers of seagulls making their home in the capital. The charity says: “Gulls are often perceived as intimidating, but if they are aggressive it’s because they’re either protecting their young or feel threatened by us.”

London Mayor Boris Johnson is using well-known faces such as Radio1 DJ Edith Bowman and X-Factor presenter Dermot O’Leary to publicise the delights of cycling in the capital. Environmental charity Trees for Cities is preparing for its annual Tree-Athlon run in Battersea Park in London on September 18. And this year, some of the participants will be tackling the 5k run in bare feet. All the money raised goes to tree planting projects. Local people are being invited to join Trust Thamesmead staff and members of the waterways charity Thames21 for a clean-up around Southmere Lake. The event takes place on September 24 from 11.30am until 2.30pm. Just turn up to take part. Wear old clothes and all equipment will be provided.
