HAVE YOUR SAY: Should 4x4 cars be banned in towns?

Read News Shopper's daily opinion columns and have your say Read News Shopper's daily opinion columns and have your say

This week's News Shopper Thursday Issue discussion asks whether off-road vehicles should be banned on urban roads. Have your say and add your comments below.

The Thursday Issue is very simple. Each week we put a controversial question or suggestion to you, and ask if you agree or disagree with it.

Here is this week's:

There should be a ban on 4x4 off-road type vehicles in built-up areas. They are too big, too dangerous to other road users and too gas-guzzling, but above all they look stupid travelling around without a spec of mud on their bodywork.

LONDON: Website launched to prevent dangerous driving

Now it's over to you. Do you own one of these vehicles? If so do you use it for off-road adventures or is it just for shopping trips and school runs? To everyone else, have you had any bad experiences with these tank-like cars? Should there be restrictions on them in towns?

Check News Shopper's website every lunchtime for a new daily opinion column. Friday will be a sport rant. Monday is the Shopper Rant on a topical news story. Tuesday is entertainment day and Wednesday's rant is written by a reader. Be sure to have your say if you agree or disagree with what you read.

good argument, lets ban them because they look stupid!! How about we ban this Rant because it asks stupid questions? Why should 4x4's be banned from built up areas? If people have enough money to buy one/run one then why shouldnt they drive it where ever they like.

If people want to buy & run these (and waste petrol) then that's up to them.
What annoys me is a large proportion of the drivers think they own the roads & try to "bully" their way past everyone else. Also, look in car parks - frequently they take up 2 spaces!

I don't think ALL 4x4s should be banned in towns - only those driven by women. Women just can't handle large cars because they lack the spatial awareness that comes naturally to men.
You can read all about women drivers in my latest blog in 'Opinion & Blogs': 'WOMEN DRIVERS: The curse of mankind'.

Now remember if you have one of these behmoths and want people to think you actually drive off-road (half on a kerb doesn't count!), you can buy spray on dirt

as sexist as that sounds you are right. thats not to say that there arent any good women drivers out there. my wife is a very good driver and can quite easily drive any other viechle.

A 4x4 is a problem when it relies on a combustion engine. However, new greener vehicles can help solve the problem. Check out the new fully electric 4x4 from Liberty Energy.

Has anyone else noticed that the bigger the 4x4, the smaller the woman behind the wheel? Most of them are completely unable to handle these massive vehicles but don't care because they feel untouchable in their urban tanks.
(By the way, I am a woman and a good driver with a 32-year clean record so no sexist allegations please)

It's irrelevant who's behind the wheel - 4x4s are gas-guzzling, polluting and dangerous vehicles in a city environment - and completely unnecessary. I would be surprised if any of those you see around in London are ever used for off-road activities, they are nothing more than a ridiculous status symbol. And the image they create? 'I'm an ignorant idiot who cares nothing for the environment or other road users, utterly self-obsessed, that's me!'.

So if thats the case we should also ban lorries, vans etc as well then? They cause just as much pollution as the 4x4's do.
It's not the car that's the problem, it's the muppets behind the wheels of them.

I will remember that for the next bad snow then as the amount of people that my parents rescued with their 4x4 when people were trapped in cars and walking back miles home in weather that any normal car couldn't cope with. Not all 4x4 drivers should be tared and feathered with the same brush.
Yes the car is used for town drving on occasions but people complain like mad when they see these cars but don't hesitate for 2 seconds when someone stops to help someone in terrible situations like what we had when it snowed...they don't seem so bad then

I think the majority of you people are small minded, you are very quick to judge and as always judge on the small minority and just tar all with the same brush. I drive a 3.0 litre Shogun 4x4 - why because i have horses, should i be expected to buy tax and insure a second vehicle just so i can go shopping from time to time! Many 4x4 owners like myself are part of clubs that assist the community at times of need such as rescuing stranded drivers in snow because the emergency services lack the vehicles to do so, or evacuating an old peoples home thats flooding. not to mention the events these clubs organise such as the Macmillian 4x4 challenge that raises thousands for the victims of cancer. silly small minded people i feel sincearly sorry for you and your pathetic whiney little lives. The day a 4x4 rescues you or someone you know from freezing temperatures or pulls your car out the ditch because your a rubbish driver you will soon change your minds. until then just remain pathetic and think your a real do-gooder with such a great point to make!! meanwhile we will do the real good work while you just whine and moan! well done you keep up the good work!!!

I think you should let people live their lives how they wish. We are increasingly becoming a nation of busy bodies engaged in meddling in other peoples business. You are of course being herded to do so, I advise you to begin to think for yourselves and concentrate of your own, perhaps less than perfect, lives.

Hey, hey you with the big horses and the even bigger Tonka toy. Don’t you know you should be ashamed of yourself; your toy makes big holes in the road which your disproportionate road tax (or fuel duty) in no way covers? A cloud of noxious fumes follows you around town, the end is indeed neigh. When the glaciers melt even before the 2035 idiotic IPCC claim it will be because of you, you, you, all you. I’m surprised that the CO2 it produces doesn’t also melt the faces of onlookers. Also your horse makes an awful pooey smell that spoils the countryside for clean living city dwellers. The methane it produces also probably means the glaciers have melted 100 years ago despite reports to the contrary. The IPCC, Greenpeace and the Campaign for Cleaner Ivorytowersville will soon site you as public enemy number 2 after those awful smoking types. I hope you don’t eat meat, smoke tobacco or any other substances (nefarious or otherwise), drink alcohol, are anywhere near the 75th percentile of your weight for height distribution or have any means of independent thought.

Quite right...I'm all for live and let live. If more money than sense idiots want to drive status symbols with naff personalised number plates then let them show off their bank balances. However, come to Hayes and watch the Mums do the school run in these, mounting the kerbs and doing 6 point turns in the road almost knocking down the schoolkids while on the phone booking a fake tan appointment and then you might think it is other peoples business.
Their kids are safe 6 foot in the air watching a cartoon on the in-car TV/DVD having been driven 200 yards to school so they don't get wet in the slight drizzle or the Mum doesn't scratch their new high heeled shoes. My kids are in danger of getting run over by these dopes.
