ORPINGTON: Queen in town to see high street improvements

ORPINGTON has had some high profile visitors in the past few weeks since the redevelopment of its high street.

When the London mayor Boris Johnson officially reopened the street he was joined at the ceremony by his brother Jo, the recently elected Orpington MP.

And crowds gathered to enjoy the town fete were amazed to see the Queen Elizabeth II collecting for Help for Heroes near KFC.

The queen was actually lookalike Jeanette Vane but she still managed to bring a smile to the faces of young and old alike.

Shoppers in the high street and Walnuts shopping centre were also treated to martial arts displays, face painting, singers, amusements and a variety of stalls.

Town centre manager Cheryl Curr said: “Orpington is a great place to visit and following the high street improvements there was a chance to showcase this, at the Orpington town fete.

"Having spoken to several businesses we are very pleased with response to the event as many businesses reported a significant increase in customers.

"The event involved street entertainers, stalls, children’s rides and groups who are based in or around Orpington.

"One such group The Kentones Barbershop Singers put on a great performance and many people gathered to hear their dulcet tones.

"The Orpington May Queen led the maypole dancing which also attracted a large audience.

"The event had a real community feel and a great atmosphere.
