POLICE are appealing for information after the Stephen Lawrence memorial plaque was vandalised.

Just before 12.30am on Monday (June 28) three men were seen by CCTV approaching the plaque in Well Hall Road, Eltham, and pouring a substance over it.

While near the plaque the three suspects covered their faces with their T-shirts and left shortly afterwards.

CCTV operators immediately informed police.

The substance poured over the plaque is believed to be petrol and the three men are described as white.

One man, aged 19, has been arrested and bailed to return to a south-east London police station in September.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Nic Sargant said: “We would like to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the Well Hall Road area on Monday morning.”

Stephen Lawrence was stabbed to death in an unprovoked attack as he waited for a bus in Eltham in April 1993.

Five men were arrested after the 18-year-old’s death but no-one was convicted of his murder.

Anyone with information about the plaque vandalism should call Det Con Sargant on 0208 284 9449 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
