BOGUS roofers made themselves scarce when Bexley trading standards officers responded to a call suggesting a pensioner was being conned.
An agreement between local banks and trading standards, prompted suspicious bank staff to call, after a bogus roofer drove the elderly man to his bank to withdraw £4,000.
They had knocked on his door telling him his roof needed repairs and quoted £9,000.
This rose to £14,000 after they started work.
The man had already paid £3,000 for scaffolding to be erected.
But the scaffolding company had only charged the bogus roofers £900, of which the conmen had only paid £300.
The pensioner had no paperwork and the address and mobile telephone number turned out to be non-existent.
Only a small amount of poor quality work had been done.
Trading standards say details have been passed to Bexley police.
